Here are some FAQs on teeth whitening

Teeth whitening treatment is safe to do if your teeth and gums are in good condition and can be relatively painless when done by professionals. Most of our patients have had no pain during or after treatments and have even referred their friends and families for teeth whitening.

If you desire to have white teeth, then the first step is to visit the dentist for his professional opinion. Not every mouth is a candidate for teeth-whitening. Dentists need to evaluate you before he or she can suggest the teeth-whitening treatment. Some of the issues that can rule out teeth-whitening are as follows:

  • Bleeding gums
  • Gum recession
  • Dental cavity/caries
  • Defective dental fillings
  • Excessive fluorosis of the teeth
  • Existing porcelain/ceramic crowns and cosmetic fillings as they do not change shade and may require replacement to new shade before or after teeth-whitening.

Some of the conditions such as bleeding gums and defective fillings are reversible and may require treatment before the start of teeth-whitening program. For irreversible conditions such as that of deep stains due to excessive fluoride and other minerals, the dentist can suggest some alternate treatment options to improve their smile. Everyone deserves a beautiful smile!

Each session of teeth-whitening treatment can take up to one hour. Most of the time goes into preparation of the teeth and gums prior to the start of the actual treatment. A single treatment session can have 3 to 4 cycles of 10 to 15 minutes each and will depend on sensitivity levels of your teeth.

The Dentist will have to remove any surface debris by dental cleaning and polishing and will take your shade measurements before the start of the treatment. The shade guides helps to measure the amount of whiteness achieved by the session. The dentist may also take pictures for before and after comparison.

The lips and gums are protected through the application of cheek retractors and gum shields. The whitening gels are then applied on to the tooth surface before application of the special light. All the teeth-whitening products use peroxides of varying concentration levels to whiten the teeth. Once in contact with the teeth, the whitening gel penetrate into the enamel surface of your teeth. They then break down to release oxygen, which spreads inside the tooth and disrupts the molecules in the stains to make them whiter.

You may or may not experience mild to moderate sensitivity during or after the procedure. The sensitivity is transient, which should subside by the end of the day. The sensitivity can be reduced by using a desensitizing toothpaste at least two weeks prior to having your teeth whitened.  If you have sensitive teeth and still want to go through teeth whitening, then you could be advised to take pain medication before and after the treatment. The dentist might not perform teeth whitening treatment if the patients have hypersensitive teeth.

Teeth whitening effects usually last long, usually for 2 years. The shade change can depend on the amount of cigarettes, coffees and red wines consumed in a day. However, there are ways to maintain the whiteness in your teeth by the regular use of whitening toothpaste and/or any home teeth whitening kits.

Yes, the teeth whitening can be repeated again either for improving the shades to whiter teeth or to maintain the whiteness as they start to get yellower. The amount of time and intervals in between the sessions can only be suggested by your treating dentist and will depend on the overall health of your teeth.

Generally, any foods that can stain your white shirt can stain your teeth. It would be best to avoid such foods including red wines and cigarettes for a day or two after teeth whitening. It would also help to keep using whitening toothpaste after each meal for at least two days.
